Preparing the application surface

Undercoat treatment involves preparing the surface to make it easier for the substance to go on smoothly. Note that each wall surface requires a different procedure, so perform the right steps that correspond to your wall coating.

Vinyl wallpaper

Surface suitability: excellent

  • If the wallpaper is beginning to peel, use cold or hot water to dampen and soften the back of the wallpaper, then use wood bond (quick-drying bond) to reapply to the wall. If the surface changes, it can cause uneven coloring of the coating, so do not remove vinyl wallpaper, instead applying on top of it.
  • If the surface has uneven bumps and divots, use putty to smooth out, then sandpaper to smooth.
  • Wallpaper with stain-resistant properties or films should be first removed.
  • When removing vinyl wallpaper, also remove any thin paper residue remaining on the wall.
  • Use a staple gun or stapler to close seams between wallpaper and prevent it from peeling. Apply a rust-proofing agent to staple heads.

Drywall (plaster board)

Surface suitability: good

  • Apply mesh tape to the seams and apply putty to even out surface.
  • Use putty to even out nail and screw holes and any divots.

Paper wallpaper

Surface suitability: good

  • We recommend using the Momy Sealer.
  • Use putty to even out dents and divots.

Printed board

Surface suitability: fair

  • Use sandpaper to even out the surface and create grit.
  • After buffing the surface, wipe off powder and use the Momy Sealer liquid in undiluted form in order to improve adhesion.

Plywood

Surface suitability: fair

  • Use putty to even out seam bumps, divots, and knicks.
  • Dilute the Momy Sealer by 2-3 times and apply once. After the first application of the Momy Sealer dries, apply the undiluted liquid again.

Grasscloth/stucco

Surface suitability: fair

  • If the surface is beginning to peel, peel off and then use putty or mortar of a similar structure to even out.
  • Dilute the Momy Sealer by 2-3 times and apply once. After the first coating of the Momy Sealer dries, apply the undiluted solution. *Note that spot-treating agents may not fully stop the creation of spots; if, after 20+ years after application, you find severe spotting and staining, remove the upper surface of the grasscloth or stucco and reapply.

Smooth glass and metal surfaces

Surface suitability: poor

  • Cannot be applied to these surfaces.

Painted surfaces

Surface suitability: poor

  • Use sandpaper to even out the surface and create grit.
  • After buffing the surface, wipe off powder and use the Momy Sealer liquid in undiluted form in order to improve adhesion.

Cloth surfaces

Surface suitability: poor

  • Cannot be applied to these surfaces.

Other

Surface suitability: poor

  • Cannot be used on exterior walls, bathroom walls, and other areas where water directly comes in contact.
  • Note that the product also cannot be used in areas subject to high temperatures and open flame. Soil can withstand up to 1,700 degrees, but ordinary surfaces pose a problem.
